Many types of art and design, from animation to puppetry, and from children's books to product design, are deeply influenced by the form of cartoon, although the word cartoon is more commonly associated with humorous line drawing. This phenomenon is explored by the Sheila C. Johnson Design Center (SJDC) in a surprising exhibition at Kellen Gallery in Parsons The New School for Design named Cartoon Polymaths . The exhibition’s terms are from February 4 to April 15, 2011.
The artists, who present their works in the exhibition, are not just cartoonists or illustrators but they also are able to work in a wide range of formats and media, so that their works have much deeper and wider appeal. For instance, such artists like Winsor McCay, Tony Sarg, Richard McGuire, Saul Steinberg, Mariscal, Kevin Huizenga and Paper Rad are included in this exhibition. The coordinators of Cartoon Polymaths have brought together both the best examples of illustration with fascinating prints, books, videos, ephemera, and sculptures to create a full understanding of each artist. This phenomenon is not resounding, but rather interesting to explore and to order dissertation writing at a quality writing service about it. Although the exhibits expand a hundred years of art, they do not seem disjointed. Instead, the innovation and jocosity of the exhibition makes an impression that each artist belongs to others even if they have only a bit in common. It follows that the quiet but wonderful atmosphere of the Cartoon Polymaths is worth seeing.
